Involvement Opportunities

  • Shadow or help out an Officer

    Shadowing an officer gives you 1 point per hour! We have lots of great positions to check out! Shadow sooner rather than later!!

    This is a great way to learn about the different officer roles and figure out if you want to be an officer in the future!

    • Ensures the crew is meeting its goals
    • Attends various university meetings and relays important information
    Crew Lead: - Esures the crew is meeting its goals
    - Attends various university meetings and relays important information
    - Leads officer meetings and ensures officers are completing their jobs
    - Main point of contact for the University and Outside Resources
    - Hold a seat on the Wisconsin Prescribed Fire Council
    Assistant Crew Lead - Communicates with the University Property managers, Facility Advisers, and Private Landowners to ensure implementation of fire will achieve land management objectives
    - Writes burn plans for both private and UWSP property
    Treasurer - Manages the crew budget
    - Works with the cache manager to purchase equipment and PPE
    - Collaborates with Officers to determine purchasing needs and priorities
    - Gives the annual SGA budget presentation
    Secretary - Sends weekly meeting reminders and meeting minutes to the crew via email
    - Updates the crews burnability and involvement point documents
    - Sets up the FOR 224 Field days and Spring Fire Course
    Cache Manager - Prepares equipment for burns
    - Mixes fuel and torch mix
    - Distributes Nomex and other supplies
    - Maintains and fixes equipment
    Public Information Officer (PIO) - Runs the crews social media accounts
    - Sets up community and student outreach events
    - Updates the crew on events via social media
    - Informs public during burns
    Fire Effects Officer - Recording weather and fuel type pre and post burns
    - Calculating fuel loading and volatility post burn
    - Attending fire related conferences around the country 
    - Putting together fire related research projects
    Staffing Coordinator - Communicator between Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest/Wisconsin DNR and UWSP Fire Crew
    - Ensures individuals fill out necessary paperwork for staffing or AD
    - Coordinates federal pack tests with the Chequamegon-Nicolet USFS
    - Main contact for Aldo-Leopold Foundation Burns
    - Ensure individuals are properly equipped to staff/AD
    NWCG Course Coordinator - In charge of organizing the NWCG Courses Fire Crew Holds 
    - Reaches out to different oragnizations (USFS, WIDNR)
    - Inform Members of when classes are available
    - Orgainzing logistics for each course
    Activities Coordinator - Coordinates and administers pack tests for members
    - Schedules and leads all PT for the crew (volleyball, kickball, water polo, hikes etc.)
  • Weekly PT

    The activities coordinator puts on PT opportunities every week. Attending these earns you an involvement points! All of these sports are very beginner friendly. Bring a water bottle and dress for the sport!

    This semester (Fall 2024)

    Mondays 6-7pm in Skyward Field House: Kickball

    Tuesdays 8-9pm in Champions Hall Pool: Water Polo

  • Weekly Meetings/Officer Meetings

    Every week we have an officer meeting and a weekly club meeting! Coming to these will get you an involvement point for each!

    Fall 2024:

    Tuesdays 6-7pm in TNR 361 (Officer meeting (anyone can attend!!) - Learn more about what the officers are working on and what is coming up in the future for the crew, great for people looking to be officers next year)

    Thursdays 6-7pm in TNR 170 (Weekly meeting, topic changes every meeting (ie skill building, job searching, guest speakers)

  • Class instructors/Advertisments

    If we are offering a class that you already have the certs in (ie basic cert field days, S-212, S-211 etc) then you can help teach! Each hour is an involvement point!

    When asking for instructors, we usually hand out a sign up sheet during weekly meetings! ALSO --> Posters!!

    The Spring class is put on by the crew and WI DNR. We print off posters and if a crew member helps hang posters, it is an involvement point for each poster put up and one for each one taken down after the class!
